Program Overview
This program introduces students to the world of literary journals, as well as editing and publishing skills. Students will apply this knowledge to the production of NNMC’s literary journal, Trickster, and other literary and creative works. This program combines foundational knowledge in library science with practical skills in editing and publishing, preparing participants for roles that involve curating and disseminating information in libraries, archives, and related institutions. Participants will develop expertise in content editing, publication management, and digital literacy to meet the evolving needs of modern libraries.

Literary Analysis and Criticism: Develop a keen understanding of literary works, genres, and critical analysis, honing your ability to evaluate manuscripts with a discerning eye.
Editing Techniques: Acquire fundamental and advanced editing skills, including copyediting, proofreading, and substantive editing, to refine and polish manuscripts for publication.
Publishing Industry Overview: Explore the contemporary landscape of the publishing industry, understanding the roles of publishers, literary agents, and editors in bringing literary works to the public.
Manuscript Acquisition and Evaluation: Learn the process of acquiring manuscripts, evaluating submissions, and making informed decisions about which works align with publishing goals.
Literary Rights and Contracts: Gain insights into copyright issues, literary rights, and contract negotiation, ensuring ethical and legal practices in literary publishing.
Digital Publishing and E-Books: Explore the world of digital publishing, including e-books, online platforms, and the impact of technology on the traditional publishing model.

Our faculty members are dedicated to supporting students’ academic growth as they sharpen their ability to communicate clearly and develop their own unique voices. To support student success, the Writing Center offers free tutoring. Here, students can work individually with tutors on reading and writing assignments with the goal of gaining confidence and mastering essential reading and writing skills. Language and Letters celebrates creativity through our literary journal, Trickster. Students, staff, faculty, and community members are welcome to submit poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and art for possible publication. Students may also serve on our Trickster student editorial board for valuable experience with the process of creating and editing a literary journal.
