Program Overview

Alternative Licensure (ALP)

The Alternative Licensure Certificate Program at Northern is a fully online, flexible, post-graduate pathway accredited by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) and by the Council for Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP, April 2024). ALP provides a flexible route to licensure in education, catering to individuals with existing degrees seeking a career change to teaching. Designed for individuals holding bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees, ALP offers licensure in Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education upon passing grades on state teacher assessments.

CAEP Accredited and FULLY ONLINE, the ALP provides licensure in the following programs:

  • Elementary Education: work in diverse educational settings in grades K-8.
  • Secondary Education: work in diverse educational setting in grades 7-12.
  • Special Education: work with students with special needs and acquire strategies that are effective for all learns in grades K-12.

Program Objectives

  • Understand the requirements, standards, and expectations for alternative teacher licensure.
  • Develop foundational teaching skills for effective instruction and classroom management.
  • Gain knowledge of educational laws, ethics, and professional responsibilities.
  • Build competence in planning, delivering, and assessing meaningful learning experiences.
