Program Overview
The Alternative Licensure Program (ALP) is accredited by the New Mexico Public Education Department, and nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and is eligible for review by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) in 2023. The ALP is a post graduate program for individuals who already hold a degree (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate) from a regionally accredited college or university. Students select a program of studies that lead to licensure in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, or in Special Education upon successful completion of the program and passing scores on the required State of New Mexico Teacher Assessments.
The Special Education program is designed for individuals who possess a passion for making a difference in the lives of students with diverse learning needs. This program provides an alternative pathway for aspiring educators to obtain the necessary licensure in special education. Whether you have a background in another field or are seeking a career change, this program offers a comprehensive curriculum, hands-on experiences, and mentorship opportunities to prepare you for a rewarding career as a special education teacher.
